Tags and categories

Use categories and your own tags to slice your inventory the way you think about it.

Manifest has two ways to classify items: a built-in category taxonomy and your own free-form tags. They serve different purposes.

Categories are the built-in taxonomy — Electronics, Appliances, Furniture, and so on. Every item has one. Categories power how items are grouped in reports and how filters work. You can't create new categories, but you can hide the ones you don't use so they don't clutter the add-item picker.

Tags are yours. They have no predefined values — you make them up and apply them however you think about your stuff. Examples: "garage", "insured", "high value", "borrowed". One item can have multiple tags.

Manage categories

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Organize.
  3. Under Categories, toggle off any category you don't want to see in the add-item picker.

Hiding a category only removes it from the picker. Items that already have that category keep it.

Manage tags

Tags are also in Settings → Organize → Tags.

  • Add a tag: type in the field at the bottom and tap Add (or press Enter).
  • Rename a tag: tap its name to edit it inline. Renaming updates it everywhere it's used.
  • Change color: tap the color dot to open a palette.
  • Delete a tag: tap the trash icon and confirm. Deleting removes it from all items.

Tag names are capped at 30 characters.

Assign tags to items

Open an item and edit it. The tags field lets you pick from your existing tags. Changes apply on save.
